Solution Undefined Quiz Distractors in Unison

When using a multiple choice or multiple correct quiz question type in Unison, you may run into the problem of seeing “undefined” distractors in the quiz question. This is a bug in Unison which we are currently working on. This short article is to help you understand how to prevent it from happening, and a good work-around for when it does happen.

Why It Happens

This issue occurs when you create a specific distractor in Unison, save the course, and then delete that distractor later. For example, if you created a multiple correct question which asked: “White of the following are primary colors?” and the responses were:

Blue

Red

Yellow

Green

Brown

Orange

Then suppose that later you decided to remove the “orange” option from the list. When you do so, Unison will display “undefined” for that distractor.

The only way to prevent this from occurring is to do your best at not adding more distractors that you will want in the final question. Of course, that is often limiting, which is why prevention is not always possible.

A Work-Around

The best work-around for this issue is to simply recreate the question in Unison from scratch, this time with the distractors you know you will want. If you do this, be sure the new question has a different QuestionID than the old version (it may be easiest to add a number to the end of the previous QuestionID). For most multiple choice and multiple correct question types, this should be relatively easy.
